UPDATE - February 26th, 2010
Hello! We went to the Post Office Tuesday and sent 14 boxes of food for the soldiers! All of that was collected at the last HOG meeting. Once again, thank you all for your generosity.
Next Tuesday, March 2nd, will be the last day for donations for JR's Troop and his soldiers. Remember, food is the thing that the soldiers would like now. In anticipation of their deployment home, JR's battalion has asked that all packages be mailed by April 1st. We would like to be well ahead of that deadline.
Thank you! Paula and Scott

UPDATE - February 15th, 2010
Hello! A few days ago I sent an email to our nephew JR to let him know that 9 more boxes of items that were donated and purchased with money from recent fundraisers were now on the way to him. I explained to him that there is still money left from the fundraisers to be spent on items they need, so could he please let me know what they currently need. Here is his email to me -
Aunt P,
Please thank everyone involved in the fundraisers. My (new) soldiers appreciate the donations very much, it makes our days go by just a bit quicker than they would otherwise. I asked the guys what they would like to spend the rest of the money on, and everyone said they would like food. The food here isn't very good, so anything microwaveable (mac and cheese, noodles, etc) would be great. This way we get a break from the chow hall food every once in awhile.
The weather here has been cold and
rainy, causing us to delay some things we would have liked to have done already. Today was the first sunny day in a week, but it only got up in to the 30s. The rainy season has officially opened, and should be here for 1 to 2 months. However, the platoon is doing fine, and soon enough we will be counting down the days until we come home. Again, thank you for the donations, and take care. JR
Last week I received an email from JR's wife that said the last day to send boxes will be April 1st. JR arrived in Afghanistan in May of last year and should be leaving there in May of this year. So, we will happily take donations at the next two meetings, February 16th and March 2nd. We'd love to send as much microwaveable food as we can. Thank you so much for your continuing generosity!!! We are making a difference in the lives of these soldiers.

At the September 1st SSHOG meeting, 2009 Assistant Director Scott C. spoke about his nephew, John, who is currently serving in Afghanistan. Since there were people at the meeting that expressed an interest in supporting soldiers in his Company, Scott and his wife Paula emailed him to get a list of suggested items.
If you can purchase any of the items on the list, just bring them to any SSHOG meeting. Scott will bring them home, we will box them up and ship them out. THANK YOU for your support.
The email below is from John.
I am really excited that SSHOG is willing to help us out.We have no females as there are no females in the Infantry, we have no connectivity to iTunes, and we do not have a PX because we live on a COP (Combat Outpost) which means there are about 120 of us out in the middle of the desert near some compounds (we are in the Maywand/Zhari district if you want to look it up), with no PX or stores or anything like that. We get water, food and supplies brought in by helicopter. This is actually kind of funny if you know the history of Afghanistan because the helicopters that bring us supplies are the old Russian helicopters that one day fought the Afghans, and lost.
I am in Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
Below is a list of items that would be useful:
UPDATE: January 1st, 2010
Happy New Year!
The week before Christmas 2009 we shipped 13 boxes of the items collected at the last few SSHOG meetings. I received an e-mail from our nephew today letting us know that they got the packages. Here is his e-mail and a picture of the Harley-Davidson flag flying over their camp. Just think, if you signed that flag your name is now flying over FOB Wilson in Afghanistan! Scott and Paula C.
"Aunt P,
We received the flag and all the boxes you sent us a few days ago. I
would have had these pictures to you sooner, but there hasn't been any
wind until today. Again, my soldiers thank SSHOG for all they have
sent us. Hopefully this picture will show you just how appreciative
we are. If you need more, let me know.

Again, thank SSHOG for their help, our Soldiers appreciate it a lot.
Sincerely,
